100 degree Mondays when the computers don't work right, meetings don't flow right, things don't go quite as planned, and at 10:10pm when you could be out rockin' your Mr. T tee at Avalon for 80s Night or singing Milli Vanilli at Barney's Beanery but instead you're in front of your computer with a fan blowing hot air in your face because it's sill one million degrees in The Valley and you still have work to do can blow up.
Yahooey Kablooey!
So let's do some Weekend Notes and Blog like dispatches and dream of happier times.
Spider-Man 2 on the IMAX was pretty but the dialogue was killing me. The first half of the film is building this really strong nuanced story for young Peter Parker (even with all the women screaming and a not entirely convincing performance by Alfred Molina and all the introductions of new characters that YOU SHOULD REMEMBER FOR LATER) as his sacrifices to be Spider-Man has succeeded in making his personal life crumble around him. Even with the complete Superman II rip-off of the removal of powers in order to lead a normal life, I was totally with Spidey 2 until Aunt May gave her "I Need A Hero" speech at the garage sale. From that point on, the dialogue was just awfully ham-handed and cheesy and I was stuck with the soundtrack from Footloose dancing in my head.
Vida is an attractive all-purpose kind of night spot hidden away on hillhurst and Franklin. It would be the perfect place to have a good date. You can drink, eat, and dance there and it's large enough that you won't feel claustrophobic. For the smokers, they have an outdoor patio. For the dance fiends, the dance floor is in a sunken room separate from the main bar and restaurant. You can also get a free drink or two and quite strong ones at that if you just tip decently and show the bartenders love. It's also a nice place for a birthday party, even if only about 40 of the hosts 180 rsvp'ed guests actually make it to the soiree. Poor host, I think she was bummed at the relatively low turnout. I was there, though, and really that's all that matters. JT's in the Building!
The Perfect Score is a perfectly OK movie and worth the DVD rental. Eurotrip isn't exactly funny and I'm not really comfortable with "sexy Michelle Trachtenberg" (even though her Six Feet Under character is changing that perception) but it does showcase how much better an actress she is than I ever gave her credit for on Buffy and I can't say I hated it.
Low Culture is too funny and smart for it's own damn good.
Pop+Politics relaunched today and I love the site as I always have but they still don't have an rss feed.
Tiffany B Brown wants to know where all the black folks at at these Blog Conferences. I want to know, too. I should start making my 101/1001 list and make sure that SXSW attendance and participation is on it, so that I'm no longer part of the problem.
Afro-Netizen is one cat, though, that is making it to a Con.
And I'm not blogging the convention but damn...William Jefferson Clinton is still the Magick!
