"Music and wine just to pass the time." - Blue Six, Music and Wine (Teksoul Dub)
My friend Michelle, of Music With Me, posted the following:
The average iTunes library has 5,409 songs of which 4,195 have never been played. Put another way: we listen to about 19% of the music we own.
Why upload your entire library when you only listen to 19% of your music. Ever.
I'm not interested in debating the value of putting music in the cloud. What I am interested in is my own musical listening habits.
My iTunes library has 23,398 songs of which 1,956 items have never been played. In the good news department, only 8% of my library has never been played. In the bad news department, there is nearly 12 GBs of music that has survived two new hard drives without having been played in six years. Many of these songs were part of my mass exodus from CD to digital and haven't touched my ears since my last major iTunes migration failure on June 28th, 2005!!
So, my project this Summer is to listen to all of these songs and determine if they are worthy of staying on my hard drive (three stars or better) or are candidates for deletion (two stars or less). By the end of Summer, I hope to have no unrated songs on my library unless they are new to me labor day week.
To do this, I have added into my smart playlist rotation a constantly updating list of 150 songs rated less than one star least recently added to my library. I will be playing the songs from shortest to longest each week every time I listen to the playlist, in the hopes of getting through a bulk of the library quickly.
This first playlist features some classics from The Talking Heads, Paul Weller, and The Chemical Brothers; some bands I really liked in the early 200s like !!!, The Zutons, and Pinback; and some bands I barely remember (or maybe don't remember at all) like Elbow, The Magic Numbers, and Elf Power (who?!).
Wish me luck.
